Essay Writing Tips For International Students An essay is a continuous piece of writing in which ideas, propositions, research and justifications are put forward and analysed in the form of a series of paragraphs. You may feel that, for your particular essay, structures like these feel too rigid. You may wish to create a more flexible or fluid structure. To start you off, and to minimise the likelihood of writer’s block, a useful exercise is to do a ‘brainstorm’ of all your ideas in connection with the essay title. An essay assesses the strength of your critical thinking and your ability to put that thinking into a persuasive written form. They are also useful tools to promote thinking and learning. You are required to develop an argument and apply critical thinking skills to analyse a range of academic sources in support of your argument. Delete any irrelevant sections; improve expressions by changing the vocabulary. Now write up your final draft and submit it before the deadline. I know personally how boring writing an essay can be, and also, how hard it can be to write a good one. Honestly, throughout most of high school and college, I was a mediocre essay writer. However, it is important that this is brief and that you only include information that is directly relevant to the topic. An essay is not like a mystery novel which keeps the reader in suspense; it should not slowly reveal the argument to the reader. It can be a way of making a lot of progress quite quickly. Good, constructively critical feedback can give you excellent guidance on how to improve your essay writing. Naturally, you will need to do some background reading to consolidate your ideas before your start planning your essay.
